Special Edition: Guan Yu Exclusive Interview
— Guan Yu enjoys coffee while being interviewed by our reporters at a café.
From the Three Kingdom period to the present day—more than a few thousand years—we ushered into the world the great General Guan Yu, who is among the most celebrated figures in martial history. In this interview, you will hear firsthand accounts about the legendary steed “Red Hare,” regarded as one of the finest warhorses of its time. Let's hear directly from the General himself.
Q1. What were your first impressions when you met Red Hare?
Guan Yu: At first, I was skeptical, wondering, “Is this horse truly extraordinary?” I had seen many fine horses before, but Red Hare had a striking presence. Its lineage and physique were outstanding, and its sharp eyes hinted at remarkable intelligence. I quickly realized, “This is no ordinary steed.”
Q2. Of all the battles you fought alongside Red Hare, which one stands out the most?
Guan Yu: That would be the Battle of Baima (White Horse). At the time, I was temporarily under the command of Cao Cao, facing Yan Liang, a formidable warrior. Red Hare’s incredible speed allowed me to charge through enemy lines in a way no one expected. Because of that, I was able to strike down Yan Liang in a single blow. When the battle ended, I was exhausted, but Red Hare stood strong—alert and ready. That victory wasn’t just mine; it was made possible by Red Hare’s unmatched speed and endurance.
Q3. Does Red Hare have any special abilities or personality traits?
Guan Yu: It’s said Red Hare could cover a thousand li (about 400 kilometers) in a single day, and I have no reason to doubt that claim. Long-distance travel can break even the strongest of horses, but Red Hare always had energy to spare. It was also highly perceptive, not allowing just anyone to approach. However, like all creatures, it had its habits—it had a strong appetite and expected proper care after battle. A well-fed warhorse is a reliable one.
Q4. What does Red Hare mean to you personally?
Guan Yu: Red Hare was invaluable in my military campaigns. Its speed and endurance allowed me to reach key battlefields swiftly, ensuring I could fulfill my duty to Lord Liu Bei. It was the ideal warhorse—one that endured hardships alongside me. A warrior needs a strong and loyal steed, and Red Hare never failed in its role.
Q5. Is there anything you’d like to say to Red Hare?
Guan Yu: "You carried me through countless battles, never wavering even in the direst moments. On the battlefield, a soldier must place absolute trust in both his weapon and his horse—and you never let me down. If the day comes when war is no more, I hope you will run free across vast open fields, no longer burdened by the weight of battle."
